Abstracts:
- »Originating as a digital feminist movement on Twitter, #MeToo sparked conversations on sexual harassment and violence against women, prompting critical reflections on underlying gender power dynamics and prevailing conceptions of hegemonic masculinities. This chapter analyzes how masculinities are discussed in Portuguese mainstream media coverage of the #MeToo movement, focusing on opinion-based journalism in the newsmagazines Sábado and Visão. Using thematic analysis on 16 opinion pieces, two main themes were identified: Models of Masculinities and #MeToo: a “revolution.” Our findings reveal a limited emphasis on discussions about masculinities and their critical examination in Portugal, suggesting hesitance to challenge patriarchy and deconstruct hegemonic masculinities.« (Source: Taylor & Francis Online)

- »Cerqueira et al.’s Chapter 3 delved into how the media covered the #MeToo movement and discussed masculinities. Specifically, they analyzed opinion-based journalism in the news magazines Sábado and Visão to better understand the discourse surrounding the movement in Portugal. The primary objective of this chapter is to conduct a comprehensive analysis of how masculinities are represented in Portuguese mainstream media coverage of the #MeToo movement, particularly in opinion-based journalism published in the digital newsmagazines Sábado and Visão between the second semester of 2017 and the first trimester of 2023. The central research question focuses on understanding how the media portrayal of #MeToo in Portugal has influenced the reinforcement or deconstruction of hegemonic masculinities. Data for this study were manually extracted from the online pages of Sábado and Visão using the keyword “MeToo,” covering the period from February 4, 2018, to January 22, 2021. Sixteen opinion pieces were identified and analyzed, revealing two main themes: Models of Masculinities and #MeToo: a “revolution,” each with corresponding subthemes. The analysis highlights how the media shapes societal perceptions of masculinity and how the #MeToo movement has sparked discussions on gender power dynamics, toxic masculinity, and the impact of the movement itself. While some authors celebrate #MeToo as a revolutionary force challenging patriarchal norms, others express concerns about potential negative consequences such as cancel culture and the persecution of innocent individuals. Despite the varying perspectives, the analysis underscores the complex interplay between media representation, societal attitudes, and the ongoing struggle to address gender inequality and sexual violence.« (Source: Santos, Sofia J., et al. »Masculinities and the digital realm across Europe: Exploring heterogeneity, diversity, and non-linearity.« Renegotiating Masculinities in European Digital Spheres.
